What is a private label?

The private labels (PLs) now play a central role in retail and mass merchandising. They refer to products or product lines sold under a brand owned by a retailer, rather than under the manufacturer’s brand. Unlike national brands, private labels are developed to directly align with the retailer’s business strategy, giving the retailer greater control over their positioning, product assortment, pricing policy, and marketing. This control allows retailers to manage costs, margins, and the differentiation of their offerings more precisely.

Long associated primarily as a less expensive alternative to national brands, private labels have thus become a true strategic lever, enabling retailers to strengthen their competitiveness, develop their own value propositions, and better tailor their offerings to consumer expectations. Their development, however, requires close coordination of pricing, product assortment, and PL (Private Label)
